Rails on the Escarpment Hike with Paul LaPierre

May 16 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

A 2.5 miles hike exploring the histories of the STONY CLOVE & CATSKILL MOUNTAIN, OTIS ELEVATING, and CATSKILL & TANNERSVILLE railroads of the 19th and early 20th centuries. These long gone railroads once brought thousands of travelers to the resorts of the Mountain Top, especially to the famed CATSKILL MOUNTAIN HOUSE and the HOTEL KAATERSKILL. The hike will start in the parking lot at the south end of South Lake in the North-South Lake Campground, part of the Catskill State Park. We will hike to the site of the upper station of the OTIS ELEVATING RR, follow the roadbed of the CATSKILL & TANNERSVILLE RR to the site of the STONY CLOVE & CATSKILL MOUNTAIN RR station, back where we started. From there a short hike will take us to the site of the small rail yard where a number of artifacts remain after the removal of the tracks in 1940.

Hike Leader, Paul LaPierre is Vice-President of the Empire State Railway Museum in Phoenicia, NY, a member of the Mountain Top Historical Society and a life-long railroad enthusiast, particularly of the Mountain Top railroads and the activities they supported.

Meet in the parking lot at south end of South Lake.

Space is limited. To register, email mthsdirector@mths.org or call 518-589-6657.
