SUMMARY:Children’s Geology Hike\, with Robert Titus at the Mountain Top Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:After a quick intro to the science of geology\, participants will walk round the Haines Falls campus as Dr. Titus describes how the Ice Age glaciers rose out of the Kaaterskill Clove and overran the Historical Society site. The hikers will examine the kame and kettle moraine at the Haines Family Cemetery\, and the large stones that litter the campus. Level of difficulty: Easy. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Bring water and snacks. DESCRIPTION:Painters of all ages and skills are invited to come to the beautiful Mountain Top Historical Society campus for a day of plein air painting. The campus features a pond\, woodlands\, historic buildings\, a red barn\, and ice age erratic rocks. Artists are asked to bring their own supplies and set up. There will be a children’s table with watercolor palettes and brushes. At 2 p.m. there will be a showing of all the paintings in the historic 1913 U & D Train Station. Of special note: as part of this day devoted to artistic expression in the Catskills\, at 11:00 a.m.\, the final Greene County celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and Revolutionary War will take place in the Train Station. DESCRIPTION:For the finale of Greene County’s celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, County Historian Jonathan Palmer will present a talk titled “Canvas and Hemlock: the revolutionary dawn of the Catskills.” Mr. Palmer’s talk will focus on the shaping of American identity that took place in the Catskill Mountains in the years following the end of the American Revolution. Using the lens of the Hudson River School of Art\, attendees will learn how the establishment of the country’s first distinct artistic tradition occurred hand-in-hand with the development of the Catskills as an epicenter of industry and leisure in the young Republic.
